What is a Listed Building?
A ' Listed Building' is a property or structure (and on some occasions an object) that has been judged to be of national interest from an historical or architectural stand point.
To find details on any property or building classified as listed see the 'statutory list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest'. This list is administered by English Heritage.
There are over 374,000 listed buildings in England. Any building, in its original condition and built before 1700, is classified as listed. Nearly all properties built between 1700 and 1840 are also classified as listed. There are three categories of listed buildings. 2.5% of properties are Grade 1 listed and are considered of exceptional interest. 5.5% of properties are Grade 2* listed and are deemed to be of more than special interest. The remaining 92% of properties are classified as Grade 2 and are seen as nationally important and of special interest. Most home owners properties are Grade 2 listed.
